Beginner Freelance Writer Guide
Joining HubPages has been one of the top five intelligent decisions of my life. I've been extremely lucky when joining as I've been greeted almost immediately by my first fan, yes Kirsten, I'm talking about you; and Maita you have been the second, with Lady_E good third. Here I must stop because I've received so much help from my friends that I should write at least 20 more names of kind and supportive writers.
And then I've been lucky again as I've found almost immediately some good hubs to learn from. And many good writers who gave me, and still give me, tons of advices about writing articles better, how to present my hubs in the best way for the readers to appreciate them, and many other hints.
This is not the definitive guide to being a freelance writer, nevertheless I think it will help you to begin in the right way.
10 things I would have been happy to know when I joined HubPages:
Before beginning keep in mind that I'm just a writer, these are only my opinions and I'm in no way part of HubPages.
- Wait. Don't write your first hub, don't even join HubPages. Look at the Home Page and read all the hubs there, if they are featured there then there is a reason for it. Look at how writers organize their hubs, titles, how many pictures, how they use links, where they put Amazon's capsule, rss feed, comments...... Try to catch the reasons why they are on the Topics Page. And look at the subject too of course! Then from the Topics Pages look for the HubPages section and go to Getting Started With HubPages and have a look around, especially the Tips and Advice section. I know it could seem time wasted but this is Article Marketing and you must know what works and what doesn not. I know you just want to start writing, but this will save you a lot of time in the future, and probably you'll avoid rewriting your first hubs, as I had to do.
- Join HubPages and follow the Tutorial, all of it. And everything on the Learning Center. Then from time to time read it again as there is always something worth revising again there. I know it seems a bit boring but it's needed to be a good freelance writer here.
- Write your first hub about a subject you know pretty well using all the hints you've learned up to now. Don't care too much about AdSense and keywords now, you'll have time to hone your hub later. Just write the first paragraph with keywords and SEO in mind, but then go with the interesting stuff. At the end your readers want informations and possibly written in a fluent, smooth way. They don't like much to find your keywords every two sentences. Let your writing flow. Look at what other writers do.
- Avoid for now things like the Hub Challenge; unless you are already a good writer you risk to end up writing 30 low quality hubs in a month which will bother people so much that they just won't read them. If you want a great start it's much better to go to the Forum at the Hubbers Hangout section and check for the HubMob Weekly Topic. Here you'll have the chance to know many writers and to receive a lot of useful comments on your hubs.
- For now avoid the Forum, well, beside the Hubbers Hangout. There are many good informations there, but you risk to get lost. You've already learned a lot from the hubs you've already read so it's better to stick with your writings and let the Forum for the future. I know it's important for your hubscore, but I think you'll receive much more from reading and commenting on hubs. And if you stay too much on the forum you'll simply not have enough time to write hubs. And if you don't write you're not a freelance writer but just a freelance reader or commenter.
- Now that you have published your first well done hub you'll be probably greeted by a hubber who will introduce you to this great community. Go back to the hubs that you've found more helpful for you and say thanks to them with a comment, an interesting one please, not something like "Interesting Thank You" or "Thanks for Sharing". You can do it later with a writer you know as he/she knows that sometimes it's hard to have enough time to write longer comments, but as an introduction to others a short sentence like one of those it's worthless, and somewhat even offensive. If your comment is interesting and to the point there are good chances that the hubber will go checking your first hub and even follow or fan you. That's how I made 130 followers in just two months, and writing pretty un-commercial hubs.
- Don't fan too much. I know, I know, you join and think it is a great idea to follow every writer with a score above 90. Wrong. Fanning everyone could flag you as a kind of spammer, and what's more it is said that following a lot of people without them following you back affects negatively your hubscore. I don't know if this is true, but it could be. Also be pretty careful to follow writers with a low score, less than 50, better 60. If their score is so low there is a reason, and this too could also affect negatively your personal author score. Start following those who reply to your comments and those who leave good comments to your hub. Another thing to look is the ratio between hubs written and followers. There is a difference between a hubber with 50 hubs and 200-500 followers and one with 2000 hubs and 1000 followers. It's only my opinion but this ratio is linked with the quality of hubs.
- Always reply to comments, even if you arrive at being a very successful hubber with thousands of followers. In that case it will be pretty difficult to check all the hubs of those who follow you, and that's pretty clear. Nevertheless every time someone leaves a comment on your hub you receive traffic, the money of the web, and from my point of view it's pretty ill-mannered to get something without at least saying "Thanks for your kind comment". I know it seems strange but there are some who do it, receiving without giving. On the other side there are many great hubbers who will always find the time to say thank you, and these are the ones to follow. You want to learn from the good ones right? Not from the traffic suckers. Read the comments on hubs. And the replies of the author. This will give you a better idea about who the author really is. Some topics like AdSense are discussed by many writers and at the same level of quality I prefer to follow and comment on those written by people who at least answer to my comments, even if they don't follow me. Nothing is so ill-mannered than not replying to comments, at least if you are interested in keeping your followers.
- Try to write at least one, better two, good hubs a week consistently, so that you have a better chance to land on the Topics Page and you could even be chosen to be a HubNuggets Wannabe, one of the coolest things on HubPages, which beside the honour can make wonders for your traffic. It doesn't seem too much, but how many writers to you think can create 50-100 good hubs per year?
- Whenever you have an intelligent question ask to one of your fanned hubbers and you'll surely receive an intelligent answer. If you're following the right people they'll be pleased to help you. If it's relevant instead of using the email drop a comment, so you'll give them also some traffic. Be prepared to make some very good friends here.
Never, ever, reduce Quality in favour of Quantity. If you're here to be a good writer, of course.
Now join HubPages and became part of this wonderful community of freelance writers.
Well, this is the end of this little guide on writing articles at HubPages, I wish you to become one pillar of this great community and see you hubbing. And if you write good hubs I'll follow you. :)

Nice hub yet again hypno :) Do you mind if I give you a little tip? Get yourself a tracker code (click the affiliates link at the bottom of the page), create a link to the sign up page which includes your tracker, then paste it in this hub. That way you can earn a percentage from any new people who join HubPages from clicking your link.
Sorry if you already know about this - if you do just ignore me, lol :)
Although it seems like an eternity ago when I joined HubPages, I do remember feeling although welcomed, a bit overwhelmed by the amount of traffic, money, fans/followers, and written hubs more seasoned authors had. However, I did realize that if I stuck with it and put in the necessary effort that I would eventually reach the top of the echelon. Nothing is impossible and you've certainly gave some encouraging advice to others.
Kudos to you, my friend! Keep up the great work.

Very good advice hypnodude I agree with everything you said especially the part about commenting on others comments because if I comment on someone's hub and they never comment back it really turns me off. I make it a point to let whoever reads my hubs thatI appreciated them visiting and commenting. I guess its one of my pet peeves but other than that most people have commented back and I appreciate it. Great hub.
excellent hypno, what more can I say, you have shared everything there is to share, I am a good friend, and you are one as well, Maita
hypnodude ~ oh how I wish this Hub was around when I first started. Your clear cut to the point advice is perfect . . and honestly I think helpful for anyone here . . I love how you explained it all. My hat goes off to you. . I think it a pefect hub that I am going to go and "tweet" :)

Ciao, H.
Mio carissimo fratello! You have a winner-hub here! It is very well detailed, which is an enormous help for a newbie. I am happy to follow you for the same reasons you mentioned in the hub: You answer comments and leave comments as well. And that is a way to know you are a selfless soul!
Two Thumbs up, my dear friend,
warm regards and benedizione,
your brother,
Al
This is a fantastic hub for anybody who's just starting out. Wish I would have had this thing when I first started. ;)
I haven't delved into the forums yet, but I'm sure it's coming. haha.
Hi hypnodude, thanks for the mention here :). As usual you got yourself a well written easy to understand hub! Folks probably should take your advice about the forums, I spend way to much time on them HAHA! I would have like 200 hubs by now if not for the forums! The forums are not really that bad, you can get the attention of other hubbers by posting helpful questions and answers and have a bit of silly fun. Be warned however that the religious and political forums can turn into a war zone so be well prepared with survival gear if you dare to enter. All the best and here is to the next great hub!
very useful even for people who are not newbies =)
Great stuff hyno! I've been here for about 6 months and still consider myself a newbie because I learn something new here everyday, thanks to wonderful writers and friends like you :D
Good information; I learned a few things reading your article.
thank you hypno, it is a pleasure putting my profile here, i will also put in my hub, Maita
Good Hub!!!!!
Joining the hub page is very intelligent decision. The individual get world class exposure. The information is shared at great extent. The opinion of person touches the global perspective. The person remains engaged and spends very quality time. This hub is meticulously planned and information is shared in very systematic manner. Thanks a lot for providing so fruitful information.
Great advice, I have been following you since you came to HP. You are definitely an asset. This hub is well put together and You were nominated twice for the Hubnugget and they have to choose from thousands of new writers, I would say that is a big push for you. This is great advice for new HP users. Good job.
Well said, and I echo the "quality over quantity" sentiment in all regards--followers, fans, and hubs. Your description of HubPages and how to use it well captures the essence of being here (in my opinion, at least).
Thanks for a great hub, my friend!
Mike
Excellent advice throughout. Thank you for providing this guide. I am sure it will be helpful.
hypnodude-- what a wonderful hub, excellent advice and good for all hubbers, myself included, yes forums are a big thing, but at the same time, you can get lost, so good advice. Stumbled Dugg and rated up as usual.
Hi Hypnodude, wonderful hub!!! So clearly explained that this would truly help new hubbers. I have to remember the advice on writing one or two hubs per week. I miss this out due to work and other online stuff I need to deal with. I'll try to work on this one. Thanks again :)
it's up on my hub enjoy it.
I remember coming to HubPages and not having a clue what to do. You have done a wonderful job. I'm with ripplemaker, I can't always manage 2 hubs a week, but it's a great goal to shoot for.
Well done
Hola Hypnodude,
This is a very useful Hub, particularly for those who are new or are in the first few months of joining HP. You are helping them be very effective.
Thanks for your kind comments - Arrossire...
You are a good friend.
I wish you continued success on HP. Your Hubs are spiritual and motivating. If people action them, there's no doubt they'd see positive changes in their lives.
Good to have you on HP. :)
Great hub my friend, tis always my thing to reply to every comment as I am sure you have noticed. I agree about staying out of the forums, they do distract you. The best thing about Hubpages is the friends you make and the great help you receive and the tips you learn.
When I had my own website I was making nothing but now at almost 50 hubs I am hitting $2 a day and by the end of 2010 I intend to have written 400 hubs by which time my earlier hubs will have aged. There is money and friendship on hubs, can one ask for more, jeeez I really do waffle on, great hub !
Great advice on this hub. The tip about the HP learning center is tops. That's pretty much what I did. Just read what HP put up there and apply it to what you know. Also Maddie Ruud wrote a series of hubs that really helped me as well.
Limiting forum time is another fabulous tip. It is a giant waste of time. Especially if you're here to make money.
Just learn to write quality hubs and keep writing them. Everything else will fall into place.
hypnodude- Great hub you really answered a lot of my questions that I have not been able to find answers to elsewhere. Thanks so much for this very informative hub.
Sage
I'm glad I happened on this hub. Thanks for taking the time to share what you have discovered to being successful at HubPages. I will take your suggestions to heart.
It all sounds like great advice. It's so important for anyone new to any content site, to start by learning, not by writing. See how it's done, learn the environment, and so forth. Then sit down and start your first hub.
It's good hub.. your conclution and suggest is exellent for newhub like me.. thank you..I will follow you because your qualivite hub.
As the saying goes, if you want a friend, you have to be a friend. This is good for seasoned hubbers as well. Voted-up/rated!
Very very interesting and resourceful hub. Thanks for helping a newbie like me.
Sometimes you inadvertently come across advice you didn't even realise you were looking for. I know you don't want simple thanks for sharing but none the less am glad that sharing is what you have done and I dare to thank you for doing so :-) I'm now looing forward to going back a step or two and following the route you've outlined. Wish me luck :-)

Excellent tips, Hypnodude! I confess, I didn't think of adding keywords within an article, good reminder. And I so agree with it being bad manners when one leaves a comment and a reply is not given, with at a least a thank you. I for one feel thrilled when someone leaves comments, and appreciate it. Hubpages is a social writer's site, and its the interaction between the writers that also helps with the scores and fans supporting our work.
Thumbs up!
