Introduction to Nail Biting and Trichotillomania

Stress and Anxiety can affect people's lives in many ways, two of them are Onychophagia and Trichotillomania, commonly known as Nail Biting and Hair Pulling. Belonging to the greater field of Self Harming Behaviors, beside affecting the health of those who suffer from them Nail Biting and Trichotillomania affect also their social life. No one likes to see nails bitten to flesh or hairless spots on head, eyebrows or beard. And surely no one likes to see someone while doing it. Usually performed while alone Hair Pulling and Nail Biting are negative habits which can be quite successfully addressed with Hypnotism.

As usual if you suffer from one of them you are strongly advised to consult your doctor first.

Don't pull those hairs

Why Nail Biting or Trichotillomania

There are reasons why habits or ocd (obsessive compulsive disorders) like Trichotillomania and Onychophagia are developed as an answer to rising tensions, anxiety and highly stressing situations; and usually these reasons lie in the first 10 or 20 years of life. Now, I won't go into the minefield of digging into your mind and memories to search for those reasons, first because it's a job that must be done by someone with very much experience and knowledge in the field of Psychotherapy (from Bachelor degree up), second because I don't believe much in the usefulness of digging the dirt out since sometimes you just never end digging. I find much more useful to give tools to deal with issues from now on. And Hypnotism is just perfect for that.

What has usually happened is that somewhere in your life you felt very tense, or very stressed, or very anxious, or something similar and either biting your nail or pulling your hair moved your attention from the source of your stress to something else thus relieving your tension. Moreover the pain you felt, beside distracting you even more gave two important results:

  1. The further release of endorphins giving you relaxation and a sense of well-being.
  2. A link, the so called anchor, between pain and the release of tension, reinforcing the connection between them. Anxiety-Distraction/Pain-Well-Being/Pleasure

After repeating this behaviour for some times it becomes a habit, that is a learned automatic response to a situation, like any time you feel nervous your hand automatically reaches your pocket and put a cigarette in your mouth. Your Subconscious Mind gets trained to answer on his own to stimuli and the Conscious Mind most of the times is not even aware of it. Think about when you learned to drive a car, it's just the same thing.

Now, how can we get rid of them?

My solution is this:

  1. Giving you a Quick Stress Release anchor
  2. Giving you the instructions to have the Conscious Mind aware when your hand goes toward your mouth or your hair so you can stop either Trichotillomania or Nail Biting.

Before going on be sure to read my hubs on Self Hypnosis Induction and Write your own Suggestions as they are the basis of every Hypnotism session.

Quick Stress Release

Desired outcome: establish an easy way to feel relaxed when needed.

As Anchor I used tapping your middle finger on your thumb, but feel free to substitute it as you like, just use an action easy to perform but not usual to you.

Say to yourself:

Dear subconscious, I KNOW that sometimes I feel quite nervous, or stressed, or tensed, or anxious, or simply annoyed; and that's natural. Now what I'd like to do is to establish a new permanent directive that any time I feel like that just tapping my middle finger on my thumb I CAN instantly release any tension and make me calm, relaxed and confident. I'm sure you agree that this will surely improve our life for the better.

NOW, I KNOW THAT ANY TIME I FEEL NERVOUS BY SIMPLY TAPPING MY MIDDLE FINGER ON MY THUMB I CAN INSTANTLY RELEASE ANY TENSION AND BE CALM, RELAXED AND CONFIDENT.

I WANT THAT ANY TIME I FEEL NERVOUS BY SIMPLY TAPPING MY MIDDLE FINGER ON MY THUMB I INSTANTLY RELEASE ANY TENSION AND BE CALM, RELAXED AND CONFIDENT.

Repeat the above two sentences three times.

FROM NOW ON ANY TIME I FEEL NERVOUS BY SIMPLY TAPPING MY MIDDLE FINGER ON MY THUMB I INSTANTLY RELEASE ANY TENSION AND BE CALM, RELAXED AND CONFIDENT.

Repeat three times.

IMAGINE THE ACHIEVED OUTCOME AND FEEL HOW YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. TAP YOUR FINGERS WHILE FEELING CALM, RELAXED AND CONFIDENT.

DAILY REPETITION: USE THE I CAN SENTENCE: SIMPLY TAPPING MY MIDDLE FINGER ON MY THUMB I CAN INSTANTLY RELEASE ANY TENSION AND BE CALM, RELAXED AND CONFIDENT.

Hand Awareness

Desired outcome: to become instantly aware when your hand is going to your hair to pull or to your mouth to be bitten.

Trichotillomania:

Say to yourself:

Dear subconscious, WE KNOW that sometimes when I feel quite nervous, or stressed, or tensed, or anxious, or simply annoyed I discharge tensions by pulling my hair. And WE BOTH KNOW that we now have a better way to discharge tension and to feel calm, relaxed and confident (TAP YOUR FINGERS TWO OR THREE TIMES). Now what I'd like to do is to establish a new permanent directive that any time I feel like that I want to be instantly made aware if my hand is going to my hair to pull them. I'm sure you agree that this will surely improve our life for the better.

NOW, I KNOW THAT ANY TIME MY HAND GOES TOWARD MY HAIR TO PULL THEM I CAN BE INSTANTLY AWARE OF IT.

I WANT THAT ANY TIME MY HAND GOES TOWARD MY HAIR TO PULL THEM I AM INSTANTLY AWARE OF IT.

Repeat the above two sentences three times.

FROM NOW ON ANY TIME MY HAND GOES TOWARD MY HAIR TO PULL THEM I AM INSTANTLY AWARE OF IT.

Repeat three times.

IMAGINE THE ACHIEVED OUTCOME AND FEEL HOW YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.

REPETITION: USE THE I CAN SENTENCE.

Nail Biting:

Substitute ANY TIME MY HAND GOES TOWARD MY HAIR TO PULL THEM with ANY TIME MY HAND GOES TOWARD MY MOUTH TO HAVE MY NAILS BITTEN.

Conclusion

Nail Biting and Trichotillomania are quite common negative habits which affect lives of those who suffer from them in many aspects: social life, work life, health, self image... The important thing is that as they have been developed they can also be stopped. Believe that you can do it and you'll do it.

Remember to establish the Quick Stress Release before going on dealing with Hand Awareness and to give yourself time to make them happen. And be trustful that Hypnotism can help you, because it will.

This is amazing, Hypnodude... This a.m. I was looking for a NLP anchor exercise to help me deal with releasing a bad habit I developed (I read all of Anthony Robbin's NLP books years ago), but didn't find what I was looking for, and here you are writing about the subject! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just finished printing your hub to follow your suggestions but will substitute the habit, as I don't bite my nails or pull my hair.

By the way, I have tried self hypnosis and have trouble achieving the hypnotized state; however, one evening when I was doing mental exercises and meditation, I was so deeply relaxed, that all of a sudden an image of a flame popped in my mind, and I felt the heat in my fingers, so I jumped. Amazing stuff, so this means, I can indeed do self hypnosis.

Thumbs up!

Hi VioletSun, thank you very much. I'm very happy you can use it, really happy, that's the biggest reason why I write :). And yes you can apply it to others things, just substitute what's needed keeping the way it's written. I'm sure you can do self hypnosis, very few people cannot, if it doesn't work usually it's not a matter of you, rather the self hypnosis induction used doesn't fit you. Just change it :) The induction has to fit you, not the contrary. :) Keep me informed and thanks again.

That makes sense, that the induction didn't fit me, didn't realize this. Cool! Will give your hubs on self hypnosis a read sometime this week. I will keep you informed. Thanks again! :)

Hello hypnodude hope you are well. I enjoyed your hub very much and found it to be very informative. Everyone in my family has OCD. My little sister used to pull her hair out in high school and we have pictures of her where you can see where the hair is growing back and is kind of sticking up, we didn't realize how serious the situation was. Now we are all pretty much on some kind of medication for anxiety and depression since it runs so rampant in my family. Thanks for your information, I definitely need some relaxation. Stay cool.

Fruitful Hub!!!!!!!!

The clarity and balance shine from this hub. Whenever the individual is not feeling happy, he should rub his middle finger with thumb. It will make him calm, relaxed and confident. This makes the whole hub mind blowing and quick remedial measure for any kind of depression. Thanks a lot for sharing so fruitful information. I await your future write-up with great curiosity.

Excellent, mio carissimo fratello!

These habits can make you undesirable because of the stress they generate in others around or nearby. Good advice! Hopefully, people with these problems have an alternative in what you propose!

Thumbs up!

Warm regards and blessings to you, my friend

Thanks Al, the suggestions work if applied, and yes they are really undesirable habits, especially nail biting which is immediately recognized. I'm glad you liked it. Have a great day!

Don 2 years ago

You've been helpful and informative. I suffer from a number of habits that are undesirable to say the least. I'm a nail biter. I've spent life embarrased by it. I will put some of this info to use and who knows. Maye just this once.

Well Don, since you wrote a lens on Nail Biting it seems to me that you already know the issue. So, since with your comment you have received a backlink to your article it would be fair if you put a link here from Squidoo. Am I wrong?

Thanks Support Med, and truly you can apply these techniques to any bad habit. At least you can know when you are doing them, and knowledge is power, power to stop them. Voting and rating as usual much appreciated.

smartiegirlie94 21 months ago

Thanks so much!! Only in-depth thing I've found that wasn't advertising a clinic or selling recordings. I've had a little practice with self-hypnosis, so I'm hoping this will be effective so I can stop biting those nails!! I've heard the habit might be from the mouth feeling the need to chew, rather than the hand needing to be bitten...in that case should I develop a QSR like chewing gum, sucking my tongue, or gently chewing my tongue, or something like that?? Any help from anyone would be great!

smartiegirlie1994 21 months ago

Sorry, I mean to add that maybe its a combination of both, and so could I form 2 new habits (one for the mouth, one for the hand)? Would that work?? Again, any help is great

Lots of excellent tips here hypnodude - great hub!

hypnodude Hub Author 17 months ago

Hi smartiegirl, sorry for my late reply but I'm not so much present anymore on HubPages. Anyway I think you are right when you say that the need to bite start from the mouth (actually our mind), as it's a way to relieve tension. Being able to notice the hand going toward the mouth before the chewing begins is the first step, then adding some stress releasing deep breaths should be enough if you like this instead of the Quick Stress Release. If you notice when your hand is going to your mouth you can stop it and you can't make deep breaths when under tension so breathing deeply automatically relaxes you. That is to say no need to chew anything. :)

Thanks for your appreciation and I hope this article will be useful for you. :) Feel free to ask for clarifications if you need to.
