The Fitness Exercise for Your Buttocks: the Sumo Squat
98The Sumo Squat is the best exercise for your buttocks. Also called Sumo Deadlift or Plie Squat there is no better fitness exercise for your gluteus, inner and outer thighs than the Sumo Squat, and it works extremely well all the other muscles in your leg. Plus, as a bonus, it doesn't put too much stress on your lower back. That's why the Sumo Squat is The Fitness Exercise to have buttocks as hard as a rock.
For a great buttocks workout the Sumo Squat is the best exercise to do, and beside being good for women it is obviously pretty useful also for men, as women too like beautiful, well-trained butts.
This exercise fits perfectly in my Weight Training in Five Minutes a Day article, just substitute the Squat with the Sumo Squat and you'll see the benefit for your buttocks. The movies below are meant to give a general idea about the Sumo Squat, yet they are not as perfect and safe as they should be, so be sure to read at least my instructions before using this wonderful exercise.
As usual check with your doctor first and consider buying Stuart McRobert's Exercise Guide before beginning to do Weight Training. For me it's the best book on the market for learning the best exercises.
Example 1
Sumo Squat: The Greatest Fitness Exercise Explained
If you want to safely use the Sumo Squat follow these simple instructions and you'll have no problems in using this wonderful fitness exercise.
- Get used to the common Squat, which is already working your buttocks and legs, for at least a couple of months, then add once a week the Sumo Squat. This is usually what I do alternating the two during the week.
- Start with small weights, don't rush and remember that you must have total control over your movements at any given moment.
- Going down you should stop when your thighs are more or less parallel to the ground, going up stop a little bit before having your legs completely straight.
- Try to maintain your back as straight as possible.
- Breath in when going down and breath out when going up.
- Begin with your feet at around 45° and your heels slightly larger than your shoulders and try to find the right position for you. Mine is around twice my shoulder, but I'm used to this exercise. Always keep your knees in line with your feet. Always keep in mind that you'll need to increase the flexibility in your legs so go slowly and safely. The videos are just to give you an idea, but the position is wrong, feet are too much wide apart to be safe. And if the range of movement is reduced also the effectiveness of the exercise is reduced.
- Always, always, always go slowly; you can't imagine how painful it is to have a strained muscle in your pelvis. It's an experience to avoid.
- Keep the dumbbell near your body and be careful that in the lower position it doesn't touch the ground.
- No Pain No Gain is a complete Rubbish. You have to be tired after training, not injured. If you feel pain stop immediately and check what's wrong, probably your position isn't the right one for you.
- Take your time and never rush. Weight training is extremely effective, but there are rules to follow to do it in the right way.
- Now, try do do the exercise without weights a couple of times. Don't you feel your buttocks already working very well? Isn't the Sumo Squat your best friend?
- Stretching: in my opinion the best exercise to stretch your legs, lower back and buttocks is simply when in the Sumo Squat position, obviously without weights, to go down slowly and smoothly until you feel a light tension in your muscles and remaining there for forty-fifty seconds. In this case, and only in this case, if your legs are not parallel to the ground is good. They should be for the stretching to be effective.
That's it, this is the best exercise for your buttocks in the world.
Conclusion
The Sumo Squat is a wonderful fitness exercise, useful for both females and males and should to be included in every buttocks workout. It will make wonders for your lower body, and it will really make it hard like a rock. But remember always to be careful, never sacrifice safety because even the best exercise can harm you if you do it wrong. Going slowly you'll reach your goal and get almost perfect buttocks.
And now you can read my article on the Straight Legs Deadlift. It's the perfect companion to the Sumo Squat.

Sumo Squat: Women's Buttocks Best Butt Lift Exercise CommentsLoading...
hypnodude - I really enjoyed this hub. I am anxious to view the sumo squat but for some reason the video is not working on my computer. I was able to view the first one fine. The second one just has a spiral that is moving in the center and nothing happens when you press the arrow button. I refreshed my page and it made no difference. I will check back later to see if I can view it. Great job on this article and a nice set of buns.
Sage
oh bad company you are soooo deliciously badddd!!
hyponodude, wonderful exercise but I fear my butt/pardon me/gluts/ will never be twenty something again...but still at 57 I try well as I am able. YIPPEE!!! I ride my bicycle!!!
Wow--the pictures tell it all. I love the way you guide us through the Sumo squat exercise--very clear and easy to follow. Now, what would one do with a butt as hard as steel? I hope nobody gets hurt. Anyway, very interesting and well-done!
The photos are very motivating. I've found squats to be effective but will have to try the Sumo squat.
You know I think there is nothing nicer than a great butt. A big thumbs up from me.
Mio carissimo fratello...
You did it again, didn´t you? Very interesting, practical, easy to follow! Nice pick, bro! I really liked it!
Thumbs up! Book marked and Stumbled!
Warmest regards and benedizioni infinita,
Al
Great Hub on sumo squats, hypnodude. I will give them a try sometime, but I think that my butt is long past looking like the picture!!!
Great hub! Now I'm off to read your Five Minute Workout Hub. Don't mind working out, but really would like it to take less time.
Hot and sizzling is what comes to mind when I first saw this hub! Hypnodude, this is an awesome hub, I'm familiar with the exercise, however I did not know it was called the Sumo Squat.
Just wanted you to know that I've added a complimentary link to this hub from my hub titled, "Healthy Body Sculpting Exercise for Women." Thanks a lot, I'm stumbling for you and rating up!:)
I do something similar with the aid of my Swiss ball (I stand against a wall, the ball on my back and roll up and down). I'll try your style for a variation. Thanks for making it look so easy!
Hey hypnodude, I've just tried it. It was harder than expected but it felt good. I'll keep at it, I liked it.
Ps. When are my new buttocks delivered?
It does work - and just think - it is free!!! Thanks for the tip and the video. It also tightens the thighs nicely too.
I will have to try it; the Sumo squat sounds like a good exercise; thanks for bringing this to my attention.
Im exhausted! What are you doing to me hypnodude?! lol
rated it up hypno, I can use this one, it wil be useful for me, I will just be careful like you said HOORAY, Maita
Great exercise Hypnodude. First time I've heard of it and would love to give it a try once in a while. Thighs might hurt a bit, but "no pain, no gain". Its also good that it works for men and women.
Perfect Photo on top. Best Wishes.
Ps. As at the time I'm leaving this comment - the score on this Hub is 92. Well done. :)
I tried this one, it hurts, the first day, but am doing slowly fine now, I followed your instructions, to the point hehe, thank you, hypno, youre great, Maita
Great info! Squats, if done properly, are one of the most effective workout moves! Good photo too - that's what caught my eye and drew me to your hub!
I never heard of this before but it seems quite useful to get a good buttock results for women!
oh tight butts always get my attention. Fortunately I already have a nice tight butt but cheers for the tips. I will certainly be in the Guiness book of records for the world's tightest butt!!
Hypnodude you don't know how happy I am that you wrote this. Thank you lol
I'm not too sure about that hypnodude. Have you ever acually seen a sumo wrestler's but? Hehe.
Well then, the sumo squat is my best friend too. Any friend of....
Hey I dropped by here to check on your nutrition hub> i hope you can put it together? is that what youre asking at the forum? this hub is helpful BTW, thank you, Maita
Thanks for the lesson, exercise is everything for both men and women to keep the bodies healthy and young. The important parts incuding thighs etc sports women look extraordinary attractive ... But i don't think men like hard buttocks. Honestly soft butt are perfect...
I love how this hub started at the Bottom and has worked it's way to the Top, tis fate ;)
Great information no matter your age. Simple exercises for even the boomer generation remind our muscles what they need to do. Thank you.

That is a great exercise, I have always done it, but without the weights, never knew there was actually a name for this exercise, but it works great. Thanks for sharing.
Good information and helpful videos hypnodude!
Well I for one am definitely going to start doing these...regular squats really bother my knees, but these ones don't - go figure LOL. SOOOO glad I read this :D
OK hypnodue, looks like you'll be getting a lot of hub views with your opening pic!! The exercise looks pretty easy, used to do it quite a bit, maybe I should do it again since I sit here on the internet so much LOL!! Even at my age, I'd rather have a plump fresh potato for a butt rather than a mashed potato. Thanks for the info!! Rated up!!
I'll surely remember this technique when I am doing my stretching. Thanks hypno dude.
I'll pass this around to all the women I know. Perhaps the scenery will be marked improved in a few weeks. Thanks. :-)
it is no wonder this Hub has a score of 96. I am already addicted to doing these. . .because yes I want that butt that is so nicely displayed at the beginning of this Hub. Big thumb and everything else up on this one And.....this is just about by far your best and my most favorite Hub!!!!! Tweeting it right now;) &hearts
Really great instructions on this Hypnodude. The way you explain it, you don't need the videos, but they're a nice addition. I can feel my sore hamstrings the next day already! If done properly, it really works the core too. Rated up!
Amazing Hub!! You are synonym to quality. This hub is very informative and well-written. Bookmarked it as planning to join a gym soon. Rated up as usual!!
Hi Hypnodude, pretty cool exercise tip. I don't have much problems with my butt but I intend to add this to my exercise routine :) Thanks so much!
Don't forget to throw salt in the ring for luck :)
Interesting variation on traditional butt exercises. Would be interesting to get some feedback from readers on how well it works for them.
BTW, just an OUTSTANDING legitimate use of a hot butt picture :)
This made me want to get up off the couch and try this position right away. Bikini season is right around the corner! My daughter is a personal trainer and we also blog about workout positions at Http://www.TopHealthSpot.com. I have just started following you. I intent to read all of your hubs when I get the chance. Thanks so much for saving my butt!
Great hub, Hypnodude! I'll try to remember to add this into some of my exercises. Now I want to read your 5 minute routine - I'm always looking for time-savers.
I'm still trying to get my butt to look like that, why can't it happen? LOL. Wait, no one wants to see me in a bikini, that's why. Nice hub though buddy, keep it up.
I'm workin on that one for my butt!!! Gettin ready for summer :)
i need me a booty like that, Does that works for woman that have big booty ?
sumo is ok for me but it still hurts hehe, but rated this up again in my name --
These are not good sharing
Oh I am going to try this!
OK, I'm convinced ... I have got to try the Sumo Squat! This looks amazing. Thumbs up.
Oh I am going to try this!
...................................................
Added to my workout program already. Love the burn thanks.
Great article! I didn't realize the squat was so effective but after trying it I can definitely feel the burn and my stabilizers kickin' in. Thanks!
These buttocks on the pic are really ALMOST perfect ;) I learned about the importance of activated strong Gluteus Maximus, so birddogs, hip thrusts and glute bridges are my new best friends.
For a butt like that, I think I'll give it a try. I just hope I can get back up!
Sorry, but the lady in the pictures really does not have much of a butt. Her glutes are flat and undeveloped. Take a look at any figure skater or gymnast. That's an example of glute development. I think that she should keep doing her sumo squats. Of course, genetics has a lot to do with the result as well. Good instructions.
Great hub, will surely try the sumo squat, need all the help I can get!
"Almost" perfect???
That's gotta be the nice looking butt I've seen in years... WOW!!!
Wow, this is great! I can't wait to get started. I have been looking for this a long time. Thank you so much
As a former ballerina and still extremely fit I can tell you that this specific squat exercise is a gem! So glad you have brought it to people's attention. Nice job on the hub and I like the way you take time to teach us to be careful and take our time. It's important to have variety, especially with squats as most people hate them and get bored very quickly - such as myself. TDpubs, many women are not looking to have massive muscle buttocks such as gymnasts - those women have been working toward a goal for years from a young age. Most women are looking to have smooth buttocks- no flab or cellulite. A behind that is becoming a woman - not a muscle builder. Thanks Hypnodude I will be looking for more good stuff from you to keep adding variety to my workout routine! Cheers!
I need this! I need this! LOL You are a butt saver hypnodude! Many many thanks for this hub.
*Misty
This is a really good workout! it really does work if you stick to it :)
I'm feeling really inspired after watching/viewing your hub, very informative and easy to understand! Thanks for the tips :)
Haha great Hub! I'll be taking your advice for sure. Although I may just need to eat less chocolate. Keep up the great work!
Great informational video! I had no idea there was something called sumo squats. Thanks for sharing. :)
this is kinda guy's butt on the first pic, not female's... haha A Female needs a nicely shaped butt, but a butt, not no-butt.
I agree with butt lover. The woman in the bikini here doesn't really have a butt.
I'm excited to try this...I've been looking for something that will work so I googled buttocks exercises and this one came up. Thank you again
This is a good piece. This is exactly how a powerlifter would squat, except we powerlifters must descend below parallel by about three inches. Done correctly, this exercise will definitely work. Not just for women, but for men, too.
Sumo squats are awesome. Good for us men too :)
Oh and thanks for the pictures of the ladies finely toned behinds. Was not at all distracting :)
Great Hub :) Welcome to HubPages !
Thank you for the great tips. Now that I am 52 I do see things going south. Will bookmark and vote up
That's a nice butt ;) I wish my girlfriend would get off the couch and do some sumo squats. haha
Good exercise, I use it a lot with my female clients. It seems to be very knee friendly to so great for people with dodgey knees or on the way back from an injury (in the proper stage of rehab of course)
Two other great exercises for the same outcome are Kettle bell swings and lunges. cheers
Wonderful exercise for good looking butts for women.i will surely give it a trial.thanks for this article.
Thanks for the tips. I would only make the butt photos smaller and the videos bigger if it was my hub.
But cool info, thanks!
Great butt hub! LOL! I mean that in a good way of course. Great way to get a good looking derriere. I do squats and they are great for the behind, and keeping things in uh...shape. Rate this up, and great photos too! :)
Great hub..also want to know more about developing ones chest and thigh.
Awesome. I will try them! I love my squats (they really do work wonders) and am using the bar with 10kg's on each end at the mo. Do you still think the sumo squat will work well for me?
Both video and graphics show poor form in a "sumo" squat; the legs are much further apart than shown and the knees are spread apart as much as possible, as if pulling them towards the back. One should try to go down nearly 90deg with the floor (thighs parallel with the floor) then squeeze the butt and leg muscles coming up. A dumbell will work as will hanging a weight from a chain belt; alternatively one can use a long barbell or olympic bar and use a shoulder wide grip, plus or minus; one caveat, one must keep the back super straight and all the abdominal muscles engaged when using a barbell so as not to injure the back, and do this movement SLOW and with great form. Better to do 4 to 8 really good reps to failure than 15 to 20 fast and useless reps! Good luck, lift smart!
Is this exercise useful for a man too. I will see if it really works. I like this hub.
Nice pictures hypnodude .... I loved this hub .... Great hub for exercise .... Thanks for the share .... Keep the good work up .....
Great hub, thanks for the info. My wife always complains that she has a flat butt. Not for long after I show her this!
Wow, where's you get those pics? :)

Had not heard of the Sumo Squat, you and the video instructor makes it look easy! I wonder how many hubbers are going to end up with tight buttocks after reading your hub? Would be cool if hubbers came back and shared. :)
Thumbs up!
