Article Writing Tips: How to get Followers
80Article Writing for Online Readers
Article Writing online is a wonderful way to share our knowledge, to express our feelings and to check how good we are at writing. But to be successful, and to write better, we need followers and readers. This article is based on my experience on Article Writing at HubPages, but I'm pretty much sure that you can easily adapt it to other writing sites.
Writing Articles Online: Followers
Who are followers? Followers are the key to success for every writer, those loyal readers who every time you publish something they read it, leave a comment and a rating, and also share with the world your article.
But followers are much more than that; sometimes they also become friends and are a great support in hard times, as an example when an article doesn't get enough traffic or comments. Or in the case it gets unpublished for various reasons. Your mood becomes pretty low, and then suddenly one of your followers leaves a comment saying that one of your article has been much appreciated. And the sun shines again upon you. And me.
N.B. this article has been inspired by a comment from my friend Support Med.
Why Online Writers need Followers
There are many reason why you need followers, these are some of the most important ones:
- Support, feedback, friendship, a kind word of encouragement. To see a good example of these have a look at my hubs Time to Take a Rest and Writing: Do You Know Why You Write. You'll see why I love my followers.
- Sharing your articles. Face it, if you do it on your own there is only a certain amount of work that you can do, but if your followers do it then your popularity as a writer will spread everywhere pretty fast. If only one tenth of my followers vote on my hubs on Stumble Upon, She Told Me or Reddit I would almost always be on the front page. You simply can't vote yourself that much. Also any time one of your followers spread the word about your articles they receive a link to their profile which increases also their own popularity. A win-win situation.
- Appearing on the homepage of HubPages and ranking high on Search Engines. The more followers the more traffic, the higher score and the higher position.
- Followers will improve your ability as a writer, with hints and advices.
How to Have Followers Best Tool
The best tool I used to get a lot of followers is unfortunately not anymore available: the Old Topics Page.
It has been probably the best help I had in building a following, and it was also my main tool to know other great writers. Being that it represented all categories once there it was possible for an article to remain there for a whole week, sometimes more.
My first hit, The Five Minutes Fitness Workout was featured on the Topics page for a week and alone it gave me tens of followers as I was able to be noticed by many writers. And obviously I did the same, checking everyday performing articles and if it was the case following the author. This wonderful tool gave me traffic and "notoriety", together with HubNuggets of course, which the homepage never gave me, too little space for an article to remain there more than one day, if what I've seen is correct; not that I'm able to check 24/7 though.
How to Have Followers
So, how can you build a great following even without the help of the Old Topics Page?
- Write quality articles with good title and summary. If you are new to HubPages this will also give you the chance to be chosen as a HubNuggetts Nominee which is not only great for your self confidence as a writer but will give you an enormous popularity.
- Join the HubMob Weekly Topic as much as you can, but only if the weekly topic suits you. Avoid writing just to be there, it's better to wait and write a great hub when the time is right.
- Go to the homepage and check the hubs there, it's better than nothing. Try to understand why those writers are featured on the homepage and leave a comment on their articles. Mind you, the scores not always reflect quality. You'll learn to discriminate soon though.
- Be patient and wait until one of those great writers stumble on one of your hubs, then try to follow their advices. That's what I've done.
- Comment, comment and comment. Many of my friends have already touched well this topic but I'd like to add a couple of things.
- First, if someone doesn't have the "time" to answer your comments on his/her own articles then it's better if you find someone else to follow. It might be that the article is good, but I don't think it's worth following someone who doesn't care at all about you. I don't know anyone more busy than those writers who are in the HubPages Elite, or HubMob, or HubNuggetts Team, etc. , but they always find the time to reply, and sometimes they are even able to reply with a comment on your own articles. These are examples to follow.
- Second, be patient and comprehensive because there are times when even replying to comments on your own article takes all your time. I'm not such a big player here but at times I find very difficult to deal with my 36 articles and 298 followers, I just can't imagine how hard can be having to deal with, as an example, 100 articles and 1000 followers. Ok, not everyone comments on articles but think for a moment about this scenario and see if time isn't an issue: you publish one hub every two weeks and one tenth of your followers leaves a comment; 50 comments to answer per week and probably you go back to their articles and leave a comment on them. Plus, at the same time, luckily without any contest going on, you follow just 300 writers and one tenth of them publish only one article per week. 30 articles to read. But you have to answer to 50 comments and reply with other 50 comments. 30 articles to read and 100 comments to write per week. And maybe write your own articles in the meantime. I know, success in this case seems like Hell, but it's just to give an idea of the amount of free time a successful writer has on HubPages. Not much. So be patient and you'll be rewarded.
Final Words
This is the simple recipe to have more followers: read other articles and leave interesting comments. Obviously no one will follow you if your articles are not of good quality, but this is basic knowledge on HubPages. Leaving sound comments can get you followers just like writing a good article.
Now, hoping that you liked this kind of blathering, I'll leave you with this simple thought: the beauty and wealth of HubPages is not really the earnings the common writer can achieve, nor the technical side or tools of the website. The real wealth of HubPages is You, the writer, the follower, the friend.
Now, given that you've read this article to this point, it's time to leave a comment, maybe a rating and possibly to share this article with your friends. Thank you.

Good hub as usual, Hypnodude. LIke billyaustin, I too make sure I reply to anyone leaves a comment and try to be suppotive of other writers. The way Hubpgages is designed, its a writer's social network, an a super community. You got the hang of how Hubpages works, reason why you are doing well here. :)
Time consuming it may be, but I have gotten so much from the hubs of others - I have shed tears of sadness and happiness - I have laughed outright, chuckled and smiled. I have shaken my head, bobbed my head and rolled my eyes at some of the hubs - but all are gems that give me food for thought to take into a future hub of my own....
You correctly note the benefits of connecting with others as a key ingredient to success. I look forward to comments from "regulars" and am so often inspired by the words of the folks I frequently interact with.
I am particularly gratified by the folks that will read and comment, even when I've written a hub that doesn't particularly interest them. I write a lot about basketball, for example, and when someone who clearly is not interested in sports takes the time to comment anyway, well--you know you've got someone special following you. I happily respond to every comment I receive--every word is worthwhile. Thanks.
Mike
Hello hypnodude-Every sentence is true, and I agree with you that when you are feeling low a friend comes like a ray of hope, thats the way it is.Thanks.
Hey stranger........... long time no see! Happy to be a follower............. and you've given great advice here.............. love the lizards (?) up top; that picture speaks volumes! Kaie
Thanks for this, I've learnt some new things. I voted yes on the Poll - very handy tool.
I'm glad you noted people should be patient with response to comments. Sometimes, it's not easy to reply all comments in one sitting and you have to carry it over to the next day. It takes me longer cos I respond and comment on one of their Hubs (in return).
Great Hub - I love that photo of those 2 little guys following each other. Cute.
Hey there friend, long time no see I have certainly missed you on hubpages. I think you gave very sound advice on this hub and I just wanted to say that I have always shared your hubs and rated you up. Excellent. Hope you have a nice Fathers Day. Cheers.
Hey awesome article ! I love it , I especially agree with the part when you emphasize on commenting on articles, it's also an indication to show your commenters that you're active in Hubpages!
Good hub. I learned several things here about finding people to follow. For some reason I have never really figured out a lot of the navigation, groups, and so forth here on Hubpages.
Lovely to see u again. As your ardent follower, I can see where your success lie. You're one sincerely nice guy and I can't agree more with your advice. Thanks for sharing them and rated it up, of course.
What a great how to Hub. You certainly have given insight on how to attract and keep loyal followers. I for one enjoyed this hub. It teaches one the benefits of treating all your followers with respect. After all without followers we have no audience. Cheers.
great article, useful information, gained some new knowledge....
Thanks for the article.
Great hub and pics - especially the lizards
I'm relatively new to hubpages, and I'm glad that this was one of the first articles I read. It sets the framework for how to get the most out of this site through common courtesy. Thanks for the advice.
Love the lizards, by the way.
hypnodude it was through your good self, and others, leaving comments on my hubs and visa versa that encourage me to keep going. Since then I have made many friends who like you are extremely talented and encouraging. Thank you its been a pleasure to meet you.
Good advise
It's always a joy to read your hubs, hypno and I'm happy to rate it up and stumble it :) What you say here is so true, HP is not only about the joy of writing hubs, it's about the interaction through our comments.
Good info here Hypno, I'm going to bookmark it so the next time a newbie ask how to get followers in the forums I can refer them here. Rated, stumbled, and useful. Take care my friend. :)
Good stuff :)
Nice hub, my friend. I like your final words. The writer, the follower and friends. That's the final point. Why I got many followers, because I really understand the important of follower. I believe this hub can help a newbie and they will learn much from this wonderful tips. I love the picture also. All images above represent the topic of this hub. Thumbs up and I rate this hub.
Prasetio
Great article very usefull and worthwhile reading
Great article, good tips and useful information. Thank you for sharing from your experiences.
Thank you hypnodude :)
Nice article..thanks hypodude:)
Hey, great Hub! So great infact that we featured it on Twitter. Be sure to follow (if you are a Tweeter) and RT when we feature your Hubs for more traffic.
Have a great day - Hub Pages Hottest.
Hey there,
I have to say I am certaintly going to follow you from now on. I find this hub extremely uplifting and interesting. It has great and useful information that I intend to follow as well.
I've been a hubpages member for about a year now, but with only 9 hubs so far,an equal number of followers and a not so stunning number of comments to my hubs, I consider myself a newbie!
I did stop for a little while, but I'm tryning to get back on track this time around, so hopefully I'll improve things! :)
Thank you for your very useful hub. And by the way, the pictures add a veru interesting and funny touch to your hub, I guess that is another trick to learn from you.
Take care!
Hey Hypnodude I enjoyed your blathering in this hub very much :)
I am glad I am one of your followers.
Cheers,
Grant.
Really this is a helpful tip to many like me.Thanks for your good work. Also the photoes speak more on the item described.
Great article. Good advice thanks.
To be honest followers don't really bother me as most are fake anyway. I have well over 400 but I only see about 20 on a regular basis, so hardly really followers.
I once wrote a hub called how to be popular on hubpages and showed all the tips on how to collect followers but why bother, I much prefer my 10 or so regular and loyal friends. Trust me if I could be bothered I could collect 100 followers in a week as could anyone, anyways I enjoyed your hub.
hypnodude!!! I am so grateful that you found my comments to be a source of inspiration for this great hub you have written! Your 'final thought' is so true. We sometimes wonder if these hubs are actually being read by those outside of HP, and then we realize that our on-line fellow hubbers, followers/friends are also our readers and they, too, learn from what we hubbers write. They are also our team players. Comments are part of our 'training manual.' You can tell (most times) when the comment is by someone who has actually read the hub, taking it into consideration and willing to share their thoughts and knowledge with you.
I hope, too, that all who comment will also rate the hub (as one hubber reminded me), as there are times when there are many comments, but only 'one' rating (if this does not apply to you, then no worries). An honest follower/friend can do much to motivate a fellow hubber(in every aspect of their lives).
hypnodude: Once again, 'YOU ROCK!!!' Have a great day!!
i cherish all my followers and readers. they don't have to follow me so when they do, that tells me they like my work, even if they don't stop by regularly. i can't always comment people all the time so i know they can't comment me all the time as well.
i love the pictures you selected for this hub. when i saw it on the front page, that image is what drew me in.
good job! :)
Being an island unto oneself may have been seen as rather a romantic notion at one time - the writer holed away in the tower, wrestling with demons to produce an astonishing work. But it's not very practical. I much prefer learning from others, from their comments and from reading their material. Courtesy is imperative and replying to comments is about as basic as your can get. Besides, some very interesting discussions and resulting friendships may ensue. Thanks for reminding us :)
Thanks for this article. Very informative.
This article was very helpful and I will definately use this information in the future. Thanks!!
great article i will defenatly be able to use this in the future
Hi, hypnodude. I very appreciate your article, which is a great help for me a fresh hubber. I hope for benefiting from your articles continually and being your friend in the coming days.
What's your basis for denying comments? Really awful troll like comments?
Compact ,concise and accurate article ,bang on target !
Amazingly written article ,
I would also like to commment that there are few hubbers with virtually no well written hub ,but they have 100-200 fan following ,any answers on that ?
But I agree wellwritten huo will definitely have followers (may take time)but you also have to be consistent ! Iam your fan you
It's really wonderful way of sharing your knowledge here.
When you comment a hub you become follower, when you write and wait for a comment, you become writer. Here, through this hub, a great writer attracted several followers-- including me. Great hub! Keep writing.
Leaving comments is definitely not one of my strengths. There are plenty of articles I'm sure I'd love to respond to, however finding them, reading them and commenting on them within my writing time frame can be difficult some times. Also, when I get comments on my own articles, I'm never quite sure if I should respond or not. Rarely do the comments ask a question. Sometimes I suppose I could leave a thank you to a compliment, but even some compliments aren't clear and I find myself scratching my head about what to say.
You definitely give good advice for getting followers. I'm just not sure how cut out I am to pull it off. I get the feeling that the majority of my readers are people who stumbled in off of google trying to figure out how to do one thing or another.
You are one of the best and most generous commenters on HubPages, Hypnodude, so you thoroughly deserve all your success
Thank you, Hypnodude, for a very timely and helpful topic. Many of us are hoping for followers now, as we work on our Pages, and try to make our articles better. Your tips are great.
OMG! That was really amazing. Although, I was already following some of the tacts given in this article, but still there was lots of new information. A great hub! Liked your other hubs too. They are very informative too. Must say, pictures were really nice!
Waiting anxiously for your emails or comments on my hubs! :)
nice hub and your experience.
I enjoyed reading your article, commenting and replying to comments in a timely manner is important. Good information and good tips :)
Thanks for the information here, mate. I am starting to understand Hubpages more.
As far as I am concern quality followers are much more important than numbers. From my 6 months experience on HP I found out that a lot of people just follow you hoping to be followed in returned as a courtesy.
I only follow writers with interesting points of view, good writing skills and intriguing personalities (I usually can tell by reading the comments they left for others)
Hi friend, im to hubpages and i guess this article will definitely help me in improving my own hub. Cerntily, i would be following you also. See you writing!
thanks for all the tips hypnodude. I have taken some notes and will see what the results are as I apply them! :)
Hey, Thanks for the great advice.
I've always enjoyed reading and writing, though for the past few years, I've dragged my feet, pretending to myself that I'm too busy to actually do it. After being introduced to this site (when I say introduced, I mean dragged by my ear and told to start or I'll get my behind kicked) and reading your Hub I now feel uplifted, and I'm buzzing to start getting more involved.
I look forward to reading more from you
Cheers
Awesome Hypno, and I like all your images plus your points are well taken, You are a friend, how are you, Maita
Thank you for the advice. If I had one tenth of your following, I would be ecstatic. I cannot imagine the amount of hours you put in here, but it shows in your work. Again, thanks and I will definitely read more of your offerings.
Excellent Hub. I think that both of us Patricias already try to follow your advice, but it is always good to see it expressed in a different way. Best of all, the photos you have chosen for this Hub are just perfect.
You're right that the support and encouragement play an important role. I don't write controversial topics although I've playfully raised some controversial issues in the forums. I'd much rather come to Hubpages to learn about important topics on business, travel, etc and I appreciate reading well-written Hubs. This Hub is nicely arranged.
Hi Your article is Good and it can be help me to increase Followers
Very informative hub hypnodude. As a new comer to hubpages, and someone with a reawakened love of writing, I have found this hub very helpful and will be checking out as many hubbers as I can.
Thanks for the tips.
I approve you get a click on your Google adds for a job well done :)
great hub. I also noticed that people who specialize in one or very few topics, get more followers. I write on here, not for money, or followers, but just to write. However, just this last week, I have reached out and connected with a few other hubbers and been reading a lot of other hubs. I would be one of those hubbers that doesn't get back to commenters- mostly because the comments were going into my email box and I always answered them, then suddenly they stoppd going there and I just thought i had no comments, but later to find out i had tons. I didn't even know there was a section on my account to check on comments, etc. So not being a computer idiot, like myself, will also help to get followers.
I've been a fan of yours from the start- keep writing great hubs!!
Great hub Hypnodude and sound advice; your gotta put yourself out there to get the recognition, Hubpages is a really good community, glad to have found you.
Thank you for the good tips! I always reply to those who comment on my hubs and I also try and read their hubs too. It is a nice courtesy. Thanks again!
When in Rome, do what the Romans do and take your advice. I am glad that I stopped by for I do need more followers. Time is always of the essence, but to get you must give. As the old saying goes there is no free lunch. As a 100% italian I was taught that hard work never killed anyone. Thanks so much. Bravo !
Thank you for the informative hub! I will jump on the advice train and build up my followers list. Really good job here!
Thanks so much for the information. I am new to hubpages and have been looking around the site for helpful ideas to build followers and comments. This seems like the site I have been looking for to work on my writing and improve the quality and depth of my writing
Very enjoyable and informative. Hoping that you can also be my friend here. Aloha!
Hi, Hypnodude,
Easy to see why you're so popular. Yep, I've become a follower.
I agree this is useful, and i love the pics.
thanks for the great hub.
great article, i just joined hubpages i feel like this should help me thank you.
great, relevant hub!
like the pictures too
Thanks for the good advice.
Great article. I've enjoyed the depth you've provided here. You've provided some good ideas. Thank you!
as always the talent you have amazes me, you are so right all of these points are a must when you are writing and when you want followers, but I suppose i should say rated up, and useful and all of that good stuff. Keep up teh good work!
What a wonderful article! I learned so much here. You really write beautifully!
Thanks very much for sharing hypnodude!
God bless!
I must say the more I come back to hubs the more I get out of them, which is why I love the bookmark feature. Again great hub.
Hi Hypnodude, it's a really good hub. Thanks for sharing your experience! I am new on HubPages, and I am yet to learn a lot about writing online, but I hope to get there! :)
Good work!
Thanks for the advice. I have a few followers, but I would love to get up there where you are.
We look forward to having you back on HP, Hypnodude.
It's been a while, Take Care...
Thanks for sharing these useful tips.
We don't arm-twist our followers. Like you said, normally, sound and interesting comments we make and quality hubs we write will lead hubbers to follow us. That calls for patience and commitment though. And I'm now in your bandwagon. Great tips! Thank you!
Enjoyed this hub. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for those useful tips i'll try to do all of them as i have just 4 followers :(
Thanks I have learned a lot from this hub. Just hope I can put it all into action. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing. I am brand new to Hubpages and am really trying to learn the ins and outs. I would love to get to know other writers and seek their advice. It is kind of you to post this.
Andrea
(ModernMom)
hypnodude I couldn't agree with you more. Your hub is bang on. The one thing that I know would likely get comments is to try the Extreme Hub Makeover forum. I keep thinking I should try it out, but I'm a chicken really. While I love recognition, I'm not sure how I would handle the criticism - even though they would be given with the right attitude . . . . One of these days, I promise myself I'm going to try it. LOL
voted up and shared in several areas.
I'm new to HP, so your title drew me in, and the information is helpful to someone in the HP learning curve. Thanks.
I keep getting lost in my own world here in hub pages. Sorry for the delayed response Jaye. I'm happy you found this helpful. :)
Thanks for the advice! I hadn't heard of any of those things you mentioned and have just been investigating the forum. When I signed up I didn't realise how much of a community hubpages actually is. I think I'm going to like it here. Will hopefully get lots of work up.
What a wonderful article! I learned so much here. i need more followers:)
As always you give great advice and I enjoyed reading you again, I have missed you pal. Cheers.
Well written. You make several good points, not only about getting followers, but being a good contact. Thanks for writing.
Namaste.
Good article and I like the comments on here too - looking forward to meeting you all! PS - I also see the benefit of returning comments for comments given....after all, this is how a lot of writers on the net communicate which articles have the most value to them.
A simple straight forward guide that should be read by everyone new to HubPages. Thank you.
Hi, where would we be without followers? I love getting comments, especially if I am having a bad day, or my mood just doesn't want to lift, I love it, it does take time to answer them, but by the end I have laughed at their stories, been amazed at their knowledge, and I have learned so much from their articles. in fact today, on TV there was a question about somewhere in America that I knew the answer too because of a hub! fantastic! cheers nell
I quite agree with your excellent advice and tips here. Very good and useful Hub. Respecting our readers is really the key, along with patience and perseverance!
Thanks so much.
Love and peace
Tony
Thankyou for a very useful guide. It is only politeness
and that is nice for anyone to receive.
I have made my way through a few of your hubs - really loved this one. I am a newbie to this site and to 'hubbing/ blogging' and can use all of the above advice. Brilliant work - again.
I found your Hub very helpful - I've been writing Hubs for about six weeks and I am only beginning to pay attention to the business side of things. Thanks.
Interesting hub - really amazed how much time must the elites must be spending for comments . I am new but I have already understood that firstly good quality is the key to every success available in hubpages so now I will focus on writing some more useful hubs . Thank you for sharing your experience .
After reading your article, I think I would be thrilled to have just 100 followers! :-) Any more, and I would have to quit my day job.. Great hub. Clear writing. Thanks for the insight.
Beautiful hub hypnodude! Rated up!
will take your advice thanks so much for the info!
Great hub, and article writing is a great pastime, provided it is rewarding. But Hub Pages is a great place to write. Rated up!
This is truly a great hub with honest information really good advice. I have a question for you. I follow you but have not received notification from HP when you publish new articles. I don't know how long this has been happening. I notice you haven't commented on any of mine for awhile so I am wondering is it for the same reason? Thank you.
Exacly what I was looking for. The ideas you give are great for begginer hubbers like me! Thank you!
Great article, very useful and very true.
I was away from Hubpages for a while and I noticed that for that time being, very few things changed for me. Not that many comments, just one or two new followers, etc.
When I came back, I wasn't really in the writing mode, so I decided I would at least read articles, comment and share. Didn't do it to increase views or anything really, but started noticing that views and followers were increasing by the day. Result: I got back to my writing mode again!Funny how one things leads to another.
I try my best to answer comments and fan mail, now - not just for my win but also because it brings me closer to a sense of community here at hubpages.
Thumbs up! :P
I keep reading about all pertinent tips to attract followers, yet, I'm brand new, with only 1 hub! From the overall information, I have learned to just be patient. Your article was well-presented, and encouraging.
Great article! I'm a newbie here, and information likes this really does help give me direction, and help work out what I need to be doing and focusing on. Thanks a lot!
This is still a great hub. It's similar to a tutorial; you can reference it, when needed. Great advice and great pictures (especially the 3 girlfriends - and the 1 guy friend). Priceless.
Time is always an issue I struggle with here, and sometimes that does hurt. I have many followers, almost 500 to date, and that means I have A TON of reading to do at some point in order to sort of, do my part if you will, and support other hubbers who I wish to come 'round to my little corner of the world. It's daunting. When I publish a successful article that gets a lot of attention it gets even more daunting because obviously I feel it is important to respond to a commenter on a one-on-one basis, even if the comment I leave for THEM repeats an earlier comment I may have left for someone else on the same hub.
I think you bring up some good points here and these are all things that hubbers need to keep in mind to have any level of success here. I've said it before that this is as much of a social networking site as it is a writing site, and for that reason it means one must pound the pavement as much as they can to continue to reap the rewards.
I should point out that when you taper off your rounds, it becomes obvious in your numbers. When I drop off the site for a bit, so do the number of views and comments I get. And my numbers of new followers slows as well...
So, again. All things to keep in mind here. But I can certainly attest that all of the effort, in the end, is worth it.
Well done.
I can't believe how many more comments I'm getting since Hubpages started giving commenters a rank. The downside of this are there are not enough hours in a day for me to keep up with all the comments. At least now most of the comments are of a better quality, but I still get a few that say things like "my site is better, go there instead."
I should pay more attention to what you write.
These are some great tips.
This is really a great article! A big help to a newbie in HubPages like me. Now I'm even more determined and motivated to write my first hub, and write it with heart and truthfully. Thanks!
This is a great article. It is hubs like this that keep me plugging away. As a new hubber I definitely need more followers. I will follow your advice, and try to come up with ideas of my own.
I'm hoping to capture the attention of more people and get more followers. I've learned that you need to stay active and committed on HubPages and, as you mentioned, there isn't a lot of free time on HubPages. There is always something to read, to comment on, to write about, to educate yourself on.....Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

A great article - I think content and respects others is critical as you point out. I make sure I reply to every comment on my hubs. I also make it a point to at least comment on one of the hubs of each follower that comments on mine. Free time is valuable as you point out. I try to maximize that and write what I hope are interesting and valuable hubs and support my followers accordingly.
